Elegy

“Losing a loved one is probably the most difficult thing a person can go through, especially if they had a profound impact on your life, so letting go can seem downright unfathomable at times. But, it is imperative to do your best to honor their memory and hope that, one day, your paths will cross again in another world.”

“Elegy” by Matt Galles

Memories dating back to God knows when
Melancholy reminders bringing forth tears yet again
Listening to the anecdotes and the ardent eulogies
With head hung low, sat in heavy-handed silence, ruefully
A stark contrast to who you were, always so much to say
Expressions of savvy and optimism when all seemed to decay
Now I’m left all alone with every last word of advice
And I would give it all to hear your voice one last time

So long, farewell, this is my last goodbye
May my unwavering love and affection reach you across this great divide
Although you’re no longer here, my devotion and respect will never fade
Here’s to the day we meet again in glorious meadows of gold and jade

Hard to fathom moving on, that there will be a new sunrise
And through the woeful mourning, I remain closing my eyes
Reminiscing about all the laughs and revelry we once shared
But with eyes open, all I see are gloomy horizons and vacant stares
And the unimaginable etching of your name across the ashen headstone
In a field full to the brim with naught but shattered dreams and bones
You were the shining light through the darkness of my life
And I would give away everything to see your face one last time

So long, farewell, this is my last goodbye
May my unwavering love and affection reach you across this great divide
Although you’re no longer here, my devotion and respect will never fade
Here’s to the day we meet again in glorious meadows of gold and jade

Sometimes I hear you calling back as I call out, reaching to the skies
From some distant shoreline, some enchanting place, that I can’t begin to surmise
As waves of grief wash over, I find solace in your ever-sanguine mindset
And I know you’re now at peace, free from a world of lingering regrets

So long, farewell, this is my last goodbye
May my unwavering love and affection reach you across this great divide
Although you’re no longer here, my devotion and respect will never fade
Here’s to the day we meet again in glorious meadows of gold and jade

So long, farewell, but this is not the end
Here’s to a long-awaited reunion in the lands beyond, my friend……
